How Real Lives Shaped the Evolution of Momentree’s Modular Design? At Momentree, we’ve always believed that design should follow life, not the other way around.

Too often, lifestyle products are built from a top-down perspective—conceptualized in boardrooms, designed in isolation, and then “tested” against real-world use. But from the very beginning, Momentree flipped this script.

Our mission has always been clear:

That meant listening. Observing. Testing. Failing. Adjusting. And—most importantly—inviting real people into the design process.

In this post, we’re taking you behind the curtain, sharing the real-life stories and emotional sparks that directly inspired some of Momentree’s most beloved product features—from the magnetic modularity to the wedding frame insert, from LED touch control to the holiday-to-daily transformation.

The Tree That Needed to “Grow Up” with a Child

Inspired Feature: Adjustable Height & Layer System (3–6 tiers)

It started with a mom named Marissa from Portland, Oregon. She reached out during our prototype phase, saying:

“I love the idea of a memory tree. But what if it could grow as my daughter does? Like, physically grow?”

She had a 2-year-old named Lily and wanted a decor piece that could mark birthdays, seasonal crafts, and milestones. But she didn’t want something stagnant or temporary. She dreamed of a structure that would become part of the family—not just background decoration.

That email shifted everything.

We scrapped our static shelf design and rebuilt the core structure to be stackable and reconfigurable, allowing users to choose 3–6 layers. This simple change unlocked a world of personalization—and gave birth to the now-iconic Momentree Growth Kit, which comes with

• Milestone markers (first word, first steps, first bike)
• A rotating layer designed for artwork and crafts
• A fabric leaf where a new name or memory can be embroidered each year

The Long-Distance Couple Who Wanted One Space to Share

Inspired Feature: Layer Lock Memory Capsules + Photo Clip Ring

In 2021, during lockdowns and travel bans, we heard from Jae and Emilia, a couple living 5,000 miles apart—one in Seoul, the other in Toronto.

They shared how they’d been sending each other packages filled with “memory items”—ticket stubs, pressed flowers, notes, small trinkets. But these keepsakes often ended up in drawers or journals, rarely seen.

They posed a question that stuck with us:

“What if a decor piece could hold our memories physically, not just digitally?”

From that story came the Layer Lock Capsule System—magnetically-sealed storage modules embedded into specific tree layers. Each one is designed to hold small personal items while blending seamlessly into the aesthetic.

We paired it with a photo clip ring that rotates 360°, allowing users to swap in printed polaroids or Instax-style shots. It became a favorite layer for:

• Long-distance couples
• Families with deployed members
• Grandparents and grandchildren
• College roommates and best friends

It turns out, when you let your tree tell a shared story, it becomes a bridge—not just between holidays, but between people.

The Artist Who Needed a Gallery in Her Living Room

Inspired Feature: OmniTree Art Layer + LED Spotlight Frame

We met Diana, a watercolor artist from Melbourne, through a workshop on sustainable interiors. She told us how hard it was to find decor that wasn’t “too loud” but could still reflect her identity. She said:

“I want a tree that holds more than ornaments. I want it to hold who I am.”

That conversation led to one of our most creative modules: the Art Layer, featuring a magnetized insert board that can hold:

Sketches, Paintings, Quotes, Poetry, Event posters or tickets

Each insert is backlit with a low-heat LED spotlight ring, which Diana suggested should be dimmable and color-changeable to match artwork tone.

The Event Planner Who Needed Decor to Multitask

Inspired Feature: Crystal Drink Layer + Wireless Charging Tray

Andre, an event planner based in Miami, was testing our early units for a corporate cocktail party. He called us the day after and said:

“Everyone thought your tree was a tech-powered drink tower. Can it actually become one?”

That sparked the idea for the Crystal Drink Layer, a stunning mirrored platform with chill-safe metal inserts, LED edge lighting, and hooks for stemware. We enhanced it with a wireless charging tray to power up phones discreetly during parties.

Later, we added features based on his additional feedback:

• Anti-spill coasters embedded into the surface
• A removable silicone ice chamber for champagne bottles

What began as an accidental misinterpretation became one of our best-selling hospitality features.

The Minimalist Who Wanted a Tree That Disappears into Daily Life

Inspired Feature: Everyday Living Conversion Kit + Mood Panels

We’ve always heard the common concern:

“It’s beautiful…but what about the rest of the year?”

Sasha, a design blogger and minimalist from Copenhagen, gave us the solution:

“Don’t hide the tree. Let it transform. Give it moods.”

She sent us mood board sketches of neutral seasonal palettes—sand, slate, clay, dusk, mist. We used those directly to design our Mood Panel Kits: magnetic corner trims that wrap the tree in soft tones. We launched a Daily Living Kit too, which includes:

• A bookshelf insert
• A succulent planting ring
• Ceramic catch-all trays
• Soft matte LED strips with motion sensors

The result? A product that disappears into daily life—then reappears when celebration calls.

Sasha’s request reminded us: Beauty isn’t in always being seen. Sometimes it’s in how you adapt.

The Grandpa Who Wanted to Gift Memories, Not Objects

Inspired Feature: Customizable Legacy Layer + Voice Note Token

This might be our most touching story.

Peter, a 78-year-old grandfather from Manchester, told us he was preparing a legacy gift for each of his grandchildren. But he didn’t want to give them “stuff.” He wanted to give them a container of connection.

We brainstormed and co-created the Legacy Layer—a personalized wooden tray with engraved initials, a small time capsule drawer, and NFC tokens that can be recorded with voice notes.

Peter recorded:

• His stories from childhood
• A lullaby he sang to his daughter (now a mom)
• Life advice for when his grandkids grow up

When paired with Momentree’s memory ecosystem, each child would receive not just a decor layer—but a living archive.

This story reminded us: In an age of digital everything, tangible connection is priceless.
